Conservation Science through Time: Exploring Hosmer Grove with Erika Kekiwi
Last week, we had the incredible opportunity to join Erika Kekiwi on a guided walk through Hosmer Grove. As many of you know, Erika was featured in our short film, "Heart of Maui", one of the very first projects the Haleakalā Conservancy funded, alongside another forest bird biologist Chris Warren. This film beautifully captured the essence of these two dedicated individuals and their deep connection to the birds they are striving to protect.
Their passion for preserving the native Hawaiian ecosystem to bolster the vitality of our native forest birds is evident in every step they take. Every Wednesday morning throughout the summer, running June through the end of August, Erika and Chris are sharing their knowledge of birds, conservation science, and history of place to anyone wishing to experience the magic of Hosmer Grove.
No reservations are needed; simply arrive at the Hosmer Grove parking lot at 9am.
Our walk with Erika was a truly enriching experience. She shared stories of the native plants, their cultural significance, and the delicate balance of this ecosystem. Of course, we spent the majority of the time talking about birds, looking for them in the native trees and learning how to identify them from one another. As we wandered through the grove, it was impossible not to feel a profound connection to the land and its history. It's a place of quiet contemplation, where the sounds of nature become a soothing symphony.
If you haven't had the chance to explore Hosmer Grove, we wholeheartedly encourage you to join Erika and Chris on one of their Wednesday walks. It's a wonderful opportunity to learn, connect with nature, and support the vital work of preserving this precious part of our island home.
Mahalo for your continued support of Haleakala Conservancy.
